Yes, "Southie" is MANY things:
• It is hills and harbors, beaches and boating • It is multi-family homes and close-knit neighborhoods • It is Irish, yet with a mixed population and diverse cultures • It is families, young professionals, community spirit and pride • It is brownstones, three-deckers, condos, and apartments • It is historic, spirited, and both urban and suburban • It is narrow streets, the Southeast Expressway and Day Boulevard
• It is swimming, sunbathing, sailing and fishing. It is nearly surrounded by water.
• It is Castle Island, City Point, Dorchester Heights, Pleasure Bay,
the L Street Brownies • It is pubs, parades, fried clams, and corned beef and cabbage
• It is alive, active, revived and vital • It is old, new, established – and it is thriving
• It is fine ethnic dining and great local entertainment
• It is home to many cultural organizations, including Fort Point, the largest
art colony in New England

The British built Castle William (hence the derivation of Castle Island) during the Revolutionary War, and it is said that George Washington ordered his troops, when approaching Dorchester Heights on March 17, 1776, to use the password "St. Patrick", just the day before the British evacuated Boston. Thus it is no surprise that today Evacuation Day and St. Patrick’s Day are celebrated simultaneously. |
